What Affects the Cost of a Melbourne to Sydney Move?
Interstate removals are priced on volume, access and timing rather than distance alone. Here is what moves the number.
People often assume an interstate move is priced on distance. It isn't, really — the Hume Highway is the same length for everyone. What actually moves the number is how much space your belongings take up in a truck, how hard they are to get in and out of the two buildings, and how much flexibility you have on dates.
Understanding those three levers is useful for two reasons: it tells you where you can genuinely save money, and it tells you what to have ready so the quote you're given is the quote you pay.
Volume is the main driver
Interstate transport is sold by the space your load occupies, usually measured in cubic metres. A one-bedroom unit and a four-bedroom house travel the same road, but one fills a fraction of the vehicle the other does.
This is why decluttering before an interstate move pays for itself in a way it rarely does locally. Every item you sell, donate or dispose of before moving day is space you aren't paying to transport 880 kilometres. The garage, the shed and the "we'll sort it at the other end" boxes are usually where the easy savings sit.
A rough sense of your volume comes from bedroom count, but it's genuinely approximate. Two three-bedroom houses can differ by half a truck depending on whether there's a garage full of tools, a piano, or twenty years of accumulated storage.
Access at both ends
Access is the factor most people underestimate, and it's the one most likely to change a quote on the day.
- Stairs. A third-floor walk-up costs meaningfully more time than a ground-floor house, and time is what you're paying for.
- Lift availability. A booked service lift is fine. A shared residential lift you're competing for is slow. No lift at all changes the job.
- Carrying distance. If the truck can't park near the door, everything gets carried further, twice.
- Street width. Narrow inner-city streets and tight driveways sometimes mean a smaller vehicle and more trips.
Access matters at the Sydney end just as much as in Melbourne, and it's the half people forget to check — often because they haven't seen the new place in person yet. It's worth asking the agent or the building manager before you book. We cover this in more detail in moving out of a Melbourne apartment and moving day parking and truck access.
How flexible your dates are
Interstate runs are scheduled. If your load can travel on a run that's already going, it's a more efficient use of the vehicle than sending one out specifically for you — and that efficiency is reflected in what you're charged.
So a move where you can say "any time in the fortnight after the 12th" has more options than one that has to be picked up on a Tuesday and delivered on the Thursday. If your dates are fixed by a settlement or a lease, that's completely normal and workable; it just narrows the choices. The trade-off between the two approaches is covered in backloading versus a dedicated truck.
Peak periods
Demand for removals is not evenly spread. The end of the month is busier than the middle, because that's when leases turn over. Summer is busier than winter. If you have any latitude at all, moving mid-month is usually easier to schedule.
Items that need special handling
Some things take disproportionate time or care relative to their size:
- Pianos, safes and large marble or stone pieces
- Oversized wardrobes and beds that must be dismantled to leave the room
- Large mirrors, glass tabletops and framed artwork
- Treadmills and home gym equipment
- Anything requiring two people and a specific technique to move safely
None of these are a problem when they're known about in advance. They become a problem when they're discovered on the day and the crew is now doing a different job than the one that was quoted.
What to have ready when you ask for a quote
The more of this you can supply up front, the more accurate the number will be:
- Pickup and delivery suburbs
- Property type and bedroom count at both ends
- Stairs, lifts and parking at both ends
- Anything unusually large, heavy or fragile
- Your preferred date, and how much it can move
- Whether you're packing yourself or want that handled
If you're unsure about something, an honest estimate is far more useful than leaving it out. A quote built on rough-but-complete information holds up much better than one built on precise-but-partial information — which is the subject of why removal quotes change.
A note on comparing quotes
When comparing removalists, check that you're comparing the same job. A cheaper quote that excludes packing materials, assumes ground-floor access, or treats delivery as "whenever the truck next comes through" isn't the same product as one that doesn't.
Ask what's included, ask what would cause the price to change, and ask what the delivery window looks like. The answers tell you more than the headline figure does.
